CAD CAM Technology in Dentistry
Crowns and Veneers within the Same Day
Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology is useful in restorations, like crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays and bridges, from a single block of ceramics, which makes the final product more precise compared to traditional fabrication methods.
Process Description
With CAD/CAM dentistry, a tooth is prepared to receive a crown or veneer. This is followed by digital impressions to obtain custom made 3-D images of the prepared tooth or teeth. These scans are then used to produce a virtual design which is then sent to the digitally connected milling equipment. The design guides the milling machine to carve the restoration from a solid block of restorative material. This is then cemented in the patient’s mouth to provide him the final restoration required by the patient
